Michael made his Playhouse debut in Avenue X (2001), and he is thrilled to return this season as Rochester in Jane Eyre.
International and New York credits include Leontes in The Winter’s Tale (GBS Theatre, London), El Gallo in the historic off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks and The Most Happy Fella at New York City Opera, Lincoln Center. Regional credits include title roles in Macbeth (Los Angeles Theatre Center), Julius Caesar (Folger Theatre), Pericles (Connecticut Repertory Theatre) and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (Bristol Riverside), as well as Emile DeBecque in South Pacific (Delaware Theatre Company), Vronsky in Anna Karenina (Portland Center Stage), Starbuck in The Rainmaker (People's Light), Mr. Knightley in Jane Austen's Emma (Pioneer Theatre Company) and Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music (Fulton Theatre, Maltz Jupiter Theatre; Broadway World and Carbonell Award nominations). Michael’s credits also include the Shakespeare Theatre Company (Helen Hayes Award nomination), Actor's Theatre of Louisville, Long Wharf, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Goodspeed Opera House, and multiple seasons at the Oregon, Utah and Alabama Shakespeare Festivals. Film and TV credits include Identical, According to Jim, Unforgettable and One Life to Live.
How long have you been acting, and where did you receive your training?
My first real acting job was at 12 years old in the Christmas operetta Amahl And The Night Visitors as Amahl. I was very involved in my high school drama program, and graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in drama. I also studied classical acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
When did you know you wanted to be an actor, and what’s your favorite part of the job?
I knew I wanted to be an actor from the time I was about 3 years old, although it wasn't until halfway through my sophomore year in college I decided to pursue it as my vocation. My favorite part of the job is the rehearsal process.
What is your all-time favorite role you’ve performed, and why?
My all-time favorite role I've performed is Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music. I loved getting to work with my "family" who were all kids experiencing the joy of creating musical theatre together for the first time. What role have you been dying to play, and why? The role I've been dying to play most has been Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. Seriously. This is a dream come true.
What has been the most interesting part of working on Jane Eyre so far?
The most interesting part of working on Jane Eyre so far has been how true this adaptation is to the book and figuring out how to create the same sensibility of the novel onstage.
