Celebrated for her fierce guitar playing and swinging gospel music, singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe became a veritable legend — and a 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Throughout the 1930s and ‘40s, Sister Rosetta performed gospel in the morning and swing music at the Cotton Club at night to inevitably become a major influence on rock ‘n’ roll’s earliest icons. This play with music chronicles her first rehearsal with a young protégée, Marie Knight, as they prepare for a tour that would establish them as one of the great duet teams in musical history. Marie and Rosetta’s compelling life stories combined with roof-raising, heart-rending gospel songs set the stage for an inspiring evening at the theatre.

ADVISORY: Marie and Rosetta contains mild adult language and mature themes. In addition to singing their hearts out, the characters face issues of racial prejudice, marital strife and other mature themes that are more suitable for teenage and adult audiences.

RUNNING TIME: Marie and Rosetta runs approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, with no intermission.

Katreese is a two-time Emmy Award-winning Music Director/Composer/Pianist from Saturday Night Live (2000-11), writing music for hit sketches including Dick In a Box (featuring Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake), What Up With That, The Lawrence Welk Show and I'm Not Gonna Sing Tonight. She was the Bandleader and Music Director for The Rosie O'Donnell Show (OWN) and Oh Sit (CW Network), and co-produced the Grammy-nominated Roberta by Roberta Flack and the Grammy-winning Woman I Am by Chaka Khan. As a background vocalist, keyboardist and saxophonist, she has toured and recorded with Sting, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Carly Simon and many others. She was the lead vocalist of the group Juicy, writing and performing the hit song “Sugar Free” on Epic Records. She is the creator of the livestream show Welcome 2 My House at facebook.com/katreesebarnes, which has featured Tony Terry, Valerie Simpson and a host of up-and-coming singer/songwriters.
