NEW KID
By Dennis Foon
October 3 - November 1, 2009 ∙ Grades 3 – 7

Nick and his parents are from the country of Homeland. He has just moved to America — a strange new place where he doesn’t even speak the language. Nick struggles to find his bearings and make friends in his new home. He desperately wants to fit in with his school mates, but this turns out to be harder than he expected. Gradually, he makes friends, even as one student proves to be a mean-spirited bully. As Nick learns takes on the ignorance he sees around him, he teaches his own mother about perseverance and making a new start. The playwright plunges the audience into Nick’s experience by having him and his mother speak English, even as the others speak a comic, invented language. This humorous and unforgettable play challenges everyone to question bullying and prejudice and to welcome the new perspectives newcomers can bring.

Meets Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana academic core standards for conflict resolution, cultural diversity, friendship, humanities, immigration, language arts, listening skills, oral communication, psychology and human relationships, social/contemporary issues/conflicts, theatre, world studies.

CYRANO
Adapted by Jo Roets from Edmond Rostand
January 16 - February 14, 2010 ∙ Grades 6 – 12

The famously large-nosed Cyrano is in love with Roxanne. She, in turn, adores Christian. What Cyrano lacks in beauty he makes up for with his artful words and their effect on the heart of the woman he loves. Christian, though handsome beyond words, can barely form a sentence without the help of his friend Cyrano. The two are bound by one thing: their love for Roxanne. They conspire to work together to create the perfect man — one with Cyrano’s romantic and thoughtful words and Christian’s dashing features. Will Roxanne fall in love with a face or the words behind it? This unique adaptation of the French classic Cyrano de Bergerac uses only three actors and one musician to retell a romantic and poetic story in a theatrically exciting, refreshing new setting.

Meets Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana academic core standards for classical literature, conflict resolution, friendships, French history & culture, humanities, kinetics, language arts, literature, music, oral communication, poetry, storytelling, theatre.

Class Act

Before students attend selected Marx Theatre shows and outreach touring productions, our teaching artists visit area classrooms to help prepare students. We engage students in a variety of activities that focus on the theme, plot or characters of the play. These may include writing, acting, improvising or other activities that explore the production. We have successfully prepared thousands of students for their visit to the Playhouse with a personal experience that helps enrich and focus their experience as an audience.

Adopt-a-School
perspectives at cincinnati playhouse in the park

Producing Artistic Director Ed Stern conceived the Playhouse Adopt-A-School program to help area arts organizations integrate arts and school curriculum by bringing professional artists together with area students.

Each year the Playhouse “adopts” one or two schools and provides 14-18 classroom visits a year with classroom programming carefully designed to address specific curricula. Playhouse teaching artists work in the classrooms using theatre to teach literature, reading, math, science and, of course, drama. Students are led in a variety of activities including playwriting, acting, costume design and model set building. During the 2007-08 year, the Playhouse worked with A.D. Owens Elementary School and Two Rivers Junior High School, both in Covington.

For more information about Adopt-a-School visit the Art Links Web site.
